Funny story. Here in Greece, there is the myth of goblins. According to tradition they were black, ugly and tall creatures with red eyes, hairy body and goat legs. All the year round they lived beneath the surface of the Earth and they were trying to cut the huge tree that was helding the whole world. They wanted to see the earth torn ed down in chaos and laugh about it. However, on Christmas' Eve they would leave their work in the middle and would climb on Earth to tease people making huge messes with their foods and pastries.

They would lived on Earth until Epiphany, which sanctifies the waters. Then they would say full of horror: "Get out, get out , because it comes the priest with the holy water" and they would leave. In the meantime the tree that had been left half cut it would have become whole again so the goblins had to start all over again until the next Christmas' Eve. So the earth was able to stay in position and grandparents would continue to tell stories to their naughty grandchildren and to advise them that if you do not want to be covered in... boils, then from Christmas' Eve until Epiphany you should not eat olives, beans and figs.

Εδώ στην Ελλάδα, υπάρχει ο μύθος των καλικάντζαρων. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση ήταν μαύρα, άσχημα και ψηλά πλάσματα, με κόκκινα μάτια, τριχωτό σώμα και τραγίσια πόδια. Όλο το χρόνο ζούσαν κάτω από τη Γη και προσπαθούσαν να κόψουν το τεράστιο δέντρο που την κρατούσε με όλες τις πολιτείες και τα χωριά της. Ήθελαν να τη δουν να γκρεμίζεται στο χάος και να γελάνε. Παραμονές, όμως, Χριστουγέννων άφηναν το κόψιμο του δέντρου και ανέβαιναν πάνω στη Γη, για να πειράξουν τους ανθρώπους μαγαρίζοντας τα φαγητά και τα γλυκά τους.

Έμεναν στη Γη μέχρι τα Φώτα, που αγιάζονταν τα νερά. Τότε έλεγαν γεμάτα τρόμο: "Φύγετε να φύγουμε, γιατί έρχετ' ο τουρλόπαπας με την αγιαστούρα του και με τη βρεχτούρα του", και έφευγαν. Στο μεταξύ το μισοκομμένο δέντρο είχε θρέψει, και οι καλικάντζαροι πολέμαγαν πάλι από την αρχή και πάλι το άφηναν μισοκομμένο τα ερχόμενα Χριστούγεννα. Έτσι, η γη κατάφερνε να μείνει στη θέση της και οι παππούδες συνέχιζαν να διηγούνται ιστορίες στα άτακτα εγγόνια τους και να τα συμβουλεύουν ότι αν δεν ήθελαν να βγάλουν…καλόγηρους, τότε από την παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων μέχρι τα Θεοφάνια δεν έπρεπε να τρώτε ελιές, φασόλια και σύκα.
